Crosman Phantom 1200 FPS .177 Caliber Break Barrel Air Rifle with Adjustable Trigger and Synthetic Stock Review

Crosman Phantom 1200 FPS .177 Caliber Break Barrel Air Rifle with Adjustable Trigger and Synthetic Stock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Crosman lives up to it's reputation with the Phantom 1000. This is a real rifle, not a toy. Well built, and well thought out, this rifle can stand the test of time and use. The fiber optic sights are right on the money; easy to see even in dim light. The overall construction of this rifle is solid and should last a lifetime. With a single break of the action, pellets hit hard and penetrate tin cans at 70 feet, and I mean in and out of both sides.

Included instructions are easy to understand. The trigger safety is located in an easily accesable place, (right in front of the trigger) and a trigger lock is included with the rifle. All in all this is a fine rifle, worthy of a place in your gun cabinet.

You can buy this rifle with confidence in both Crosman and Amazon.Com. Crosman makes a trusted product and Amazon.Com delivers it quickly and at a very fair price. Plus you get a double warranty, Crosman warrants the rifle and Amazon.Com's A-Z warranty covers the whole transaction. I give it 5 stars *****.This is a good product.

"Always be sure of your target and what may be beyond."

Crosman Marauder Magazine (Multi-Shot Clip Holds 10 .22 Caliber Pellets) Review

Crosman Marauder Magazine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reviewing a magazine somewhat involves reviewing the gun it's going to be attached to. To that extent, I've had my say about the Marauder ...) The magazines (I own two) have never jammed, misfed, or failed in any way.

There are TWO things that I'd love to see. If you remove the mag (say, to top it off), you can't return it to an already-chambered rifle without doubling-up on the shot. In a firearm this would be a disaster, but the Marauder doesn't seem to have any difficulty in pushing two loads out, in an emergency. What would be really neat would be a "retarder" button or catch, that would hold the mag on "Shot One" with an EMPTY chamber. That way, you could pop the mag out while leaving the rifle "hot," then pop it back in with nine (instead of ten) to go.

The other thing that would be nice is a slightly longer mag depth. Benjamin has come out with a single-load tray, which was a long time coming. So, if you're addicted to Predator pellets (a whole separate subject), you can do it, but you're limited to one. If you've used these pellets, you'll have an idea of what having ten of them stacked in a magazine would be like ...

If this sounds like too much of a wish, use the Marauder for awhile. It's not always possible to know if the chamber is loaded, and pulling the mag out immediately locks you into wondering "what's in the chamber?" Unless you have a small mirror, of course.

All that aside, this magazine works great. Crosman (/Benjamin) have been making repeater air guns for ages, and they generally get it all right.

Crosman Field Hunting .177 Cal, 7.4 Grains, Pointed, 1250ct Review

Crosman Field Hunting .177 Cal, 7.4 Grains, Pointed, 1250ct

In 1967 I received my first pellet gun. It was pump crosman 140. I also recieved two boxes of crosman pellets and even though alot of years have passed the gun is still going strong. Crosman's pellets are the same high quality as they were then. Even though I own other airguns, I still choose crosman for my everyday pellets. These field hunting pellets have excellent penatration and uniformity so you get very consistent results. I'm able to maintain a 1/4-1/2" grouping at about 150 feet. Each pellet fits perfectly and has a finsihed look like someone polished them!

Crosman® Benjamin® Discover® Air Rifle Review

Crosman® Benjamin® Discover® Air Rifle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ordered from Zephyr Sports through Amazon. Rifle arrived well packaged, but the factory tape seals were cut on the box (possibly used as a display). In any case, the rifle was in pristine condition, despite box having been opened.

I had some Crosman pointed pellets lying around, along with a scope I had on an old air rifle I planned to replace with this one. So, after mounting the scope, I went to the local shooting range to sight the rifle in.

The first thing I noticed is this rifle is LOUD. There is a sharp snap when you fire it. Also, you can actually hear ricochets buzzing away into the distance. This is the first time I've heard this happen with a .177 pellet rifle, a testament to it's impressive power.

Accuracy was all over the place at 25 yards using the cheap pellets. The gun came with a small plastic pouch of crosman "Premier" hollow point pellets, so I tried them next. With the better pellets, I was beginning to see one inch groups at about 25 yards. Still not great, but it was windy out when I went to shoot. Between the gnats, the wind, and the lack of true match grade pellets, I think the gun is actually capable of much better accuracy than I experienced on the first outing. Sadly, I ran out of the "good" pellets before I could get any conclusive results.

So, I drove into town and bought a couple of tins of the Premier hollow point pellets at walmart and went home to mount a different, better scope, then it was back to the range for another session. This time, I had a little trouble with the new scope being "finicky", but managed to get it dialed in and shoot some nice strings. My best 5 shot group at 25 yards was about a half inch. In this group, all of the pellets were in an almost vertical line, and each shot dropped by a fraction of an inch or so. This is likely due to the fact that velocity for each shot drops slightly as pressure in the guns air reservoir is depleted.

The instructions state to fill the gun to 2000 psi. At this pressure level, the shots will actually be start off slightly less powerful (because the high reservoir pressure exerts force on the valve, preventing it from opening fully). As you continue to shoot, velocity increases until the reservoir pressure reaches it's optimum, then the velocity begins to decrease again as the pressure goes even lower. For my particular rifle, the optimum pressure seems to be right around 1800 psi or so (after 5-10 shots on a 2000 psi fill).

There are a couple of things that I would like to have seen done differently with this rifle. One is that the scope mounting system is a 3/8" dovetail. This system is not a very robust one. I would much rather have seen a weaver style scope mount rail. Weaver style scope rings are commonplace and easy to find. Most 3/8" dovetail "tip off" mounts are somewhat delicate, in my opinion.

The other thing I would have liked to see done differently is the breech of the rifle. To cut manufacturing costs, it appears that Crosman uses the same breech block and bolt for the .177 and the .22 version of this rifle. This creates a problem for the .177 model where it is easy for pellets to tip over in the breech, making loading a little cumbersome with shorter pellets. With the .22 version, this would not be a problem since the breech diameter would not be over sized for the pellets.

Pumping the rifle using the Benjamin high pressure pump is actually not that bad. You get about 30 good shots per fill before the pressure drops low enough to significantly affect your point of impact. If you let it go down to 1000 psi before refilling, you will probably have a good 5 minutes of pumping to do.

Another slight annoyance I encountered was that in order to pump the rifle, you have to set it on the ground in order to connect it to the pump. If you're in a muddy, dusty, or rocky environment, this could be bad for the rifle and pump. Using the optional scuba tank fill method, or using CO2 would eliminate this issue. A longer hose on the pump would too, but a hose long enough to reach from the ground to a table would also increase the number of pumps required since you have to pressurize the hose as well. A short bipod would probably be your best bet.

Also, I'd like to have seen some sling swivels studs mounted to the stock. I already mentioned that a bipod would help keep the gun clean while pumping up the reservoir, and you need a sling swivel stud to mount most bipods.

Overall, when compared to other PCP air rifles in the same power class and with comparable accuracy potential, the price on the Discovery is hard to beat. It's a little rough around the edges, but it's WAY better than the cheap spring piston rifles sold at most big retailers. It looks and feels very solid.

If you want to upgrade to an even better rifle, I'd suggest the Benjamin Marauder in .22 caliber. It's about $200 more, but you get a 10 shot rotary magazine to simplify and speed loading (this also makes it a snap to keep track of how many shots you've fired), a far nicer stock (though the Discovery's stock isn't bad), a better fit of the pellets to the breech, and a shrouded barrel to help quiet the gun down. I have the Marauder in my Amazon wish list. Let's hope the wife REALLY loves me come Christmas time. :D

GAMO Rocket DX .177 Caliber Air Rifle Review

GAMO Rocket DX .177 Caliber Air Rifle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What an excellent air rifle. Just received my Gamo Rocket Dx today. It only took 7 pellets to sight it in, at 20 yards. My groups were within the diameter of a quarter. This is my first experience with a Gamo, an I couldn't be happier. My friend has a Beeman Elkhorn and my Gamo shoots allot tighter groups. The trigger pull is a little to hard out of the box, but after you adjust it (only took me 1 minute) deadly. I can't wait until I see some animals. GAME ON! I would recommend this air rifle to anyone looking for a great gun for around $200. I am shooting Gamo PBA Platinum pellets.

Benjamin Discovery Rifle & Pump air rifle Review

Benjamin Discovery Rifle & Pump air rifle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Man, the days of standing there pumping after every shot are over! I like to shoot and I was wanting a air rifle to so that I could shoot in my backyard. I still have my childhood Benjamin that is 20 years old so I felt that Benjamin had a quality product.

This air rifle is great! I went with the .22 caliber version and couldn't be happier with its performance and quality. I would say that you can get ~50 shots per charge before needing to pump it back up. Pumping isn't that difficult at all, about the same as a bicycle pump. There is very little recoil, not like the single cock spring guns.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this product and I haven't seen where anyone had any complaints for what all you get.

This version of the Discovery includes the gun and the Benjamin 3-stage hand pump with an attached hose that has a female Foster quick-disconnect fitting on the end. Connect the Foster fitting on the end of the hose to the air reservoir on the rifle. To exhaust air or CO2 from the rifle, you need to purchase the degasser tool.Get into precharged guns at an unheard-of price and also get the accuracy of an expensive European rifle!Benjamin has bridged the gap and taken the pain out of PCP guns. Not only is this as low a price as you'll ever find on a PCP/hand pump combo, but it's so easy to pump up that a wispy teenager could do it!If you prefer to use a scuba tank instead of the hand pump, you'll need a scuba tank adapter with hose and a female quick-disconnect with male threads. The last item already comes with this kit. The adapter fits tanks with a K valve. The Discovery has raised the bar for PCP guns because it uses only 2000 psi of air. While the European companies race toward higher and higher air pressures, Benjamin is going the opposite direction and making it easier than ever to use a hand pump. If you want to use a scuba tank or carbon fiber tank, you can do that, too, and get the benefit of many more fills than you would from a gun that operates with 3000 psi. The Discovery gives you a choice! The gun comes with a hardwood stock, Williams fiber optic front and rear sights, and a built-in air pressure gauge. Included in the package is a hand pump that's easy to use and very clear on showing you when you've reached maximum operating pressure. When you open your box, you'll see easy-to-follow and easy-to-understand instructions that'll lead you step-by-step. If you're an experienced PCP user, you'll soon see that the Discovery is the easiest PCP you've ever used. If you're new to PCPs, you'll become a pro in just a few short steps. If you want to switch to CO2, that's easy to do. A degasser tool lets you quickly and...
