It had surface dust on the scope and the box was worn and opened. But all that was not the primary issue ... the eye lens had a 1-2mm diameter piece of coating missing nearat the center of the optic (very sad) and there was dust inside the scope seen through the eye ocular. Although the scope was very disappointing (returned) I found Amazon to be awesome by paying for return shipping with a fast refund. So I do not hold Amazon accountable for this ... I do hold the compant that supplied Amazon with this inferior product condition.

Equipped with a precision Nikoplex reticle and a smooth zoom control, the Monarch 2.5-10x42 riflescope sets the standard for mid-sized scope performance. The scope offers such features as a rugged one-piece, 1-inch main body tube; a creative Eyebox design with a huge ocular that provides a 4x magnification range and 4 inches of constant eye relief without sacrificing the field of view; an ultra ClearCoat system for 95 percent light transmission; and fully multicoated, super-high-performance lenses. After the lenses are cut and polished, Nikon coats them with multiple layers of anti-reflective compounds. The compounds serve to boost light transmission, improve contrast (to pull game out of its surroundings), deliver true color rendition and flare-free viewing, and enhance the overall image quality. The Nikoplex reticle, meanwhile, is a favorite of American sportsmen, with thicker posts on the top, bottom, and sides and thinner center crosshairs for precision aiming under all light conditions.
In addition, the riflescope is prepared for years of reliable service thanks to its 100-percent waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof housing. The scope is O-ring sealed, oxygen purged, and nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, while the waterproof performance is guaranteed, even with the windage and elevation caps off. Other details include a quick focus eyepiece; enhanced ring spacing that allows you to mount the scope on virtually any rifle; a unique zoom control with rearward facing numbers; hand reticle adjustments with Nikon's interchangeable turret technology; and sunshade adaptability.

Since this scope is designed for a slug gun, it has a very long eye relief, and a very compact design. Great clarity and light transmission, and I love the lifetime warranty. If you follow the instructions for the BDC reticle very carefully, you can make very accurate shots out to 200 yards! Which is incredible for a shotgun slug!

The distance between the 2 lens is much shorter than anticipated and after 3 different scopes and 34 years on my Savage 110 30.06 I'll have to change see thru mounts in order to get this to fit!!! (More customer reviews)Leupold is one of the best in the business when it comes to making quality optics.I bought this scope for my .308 Remington 700 SPS Tactical and I absolutely love it.I have it mounted with Leupold dual dovetail low rings and a 1-piece mount.

This scope has enough power to make 600 yard shots at 9x magnification without difficulty (furthest I've used it to shoot) and can be adjusted down to 3x magnification for closer shots on moving targets.Focus is excellent for all magnifications.

The 40mm lens provides more than enough light for the power of this scope, sight picture is bright and clear.I go to the range after work a lot and shoot until dusk so I'm sure it would work just as well for an early morning hunt with less than full daylight.

Cons:
1/4 MOA adjustment knobs don't click per adjustment like more expensive scopes, adjustments are made agaisnt the 1/4 MOA incremented adjustment dials so it can be a little more difficult to get this scope zero'd than top of the line products.

Overall this is an excellent scope, especially when considering the price.
I would recommend this scope to anyone looking for a good intermediate scope that won't break the bank but offers features well above your base models.
