If you own a serious M1A then you want nothing to do with this mount.I read the reviews here and, knowing that I am extremely handy with a full tool shop at my disposal, I rolled the dice. So, I'm out $20.Not the end of the world. But there is no way that I am forcing this crudely cast lump of mixed-metals onto my finely machined M1A.Could I?Of course. But why on earth *would* I?

There is a piece not shown here on Amazon called the Cartridge Clip Guide (CCG).Virtually all M1A (or M14) scope mounts require you to replace the one that comes with your rifle with one that comes with the kit.If you look at your M14 you'll see one, and only one, threaded hole for scope mounting. And yet the mount clearly shows two spots that will be screwed to the receiver... where is the second hole? You put it there by removing the Cartridge Clip Guide from your gun, and replacing it with the Cartridge Clip Guide from the kit.The one from the kit includes a nice tapped hole in the side. That's great. That's how almost all of them work so this isn't an issue in and of itself.

To install (because, as noted here, there are no instructions) you partially field strip your rifle, removing the barrel assembly without removing the spring. You then use a small punch to remove the CCG's retaining pin, take a rubber mallet and block of wood, and gently slide the CCG through its dovetail.Piece of cake.

Hold the CCG in your hand. It's finely machined steel, isn't it?Sure is.At least mine, from Springfield Armory, is.

Now, take the one from the kid in your mitt.Feel the non-polished finish.Look at that lumpy exterior.Feels like it was sand-cast, doesn't it?Be adventurous and align it with your CCG's dovetail in the receiver... it's machined, if it's machined at all, with all the care and precision as a 1977 MOPAR ball joint.

Could I mill it to fit?Sure.File it down here, sand it there.Never forget that you always have a larger hammer, when the time comes to slam it into the dovetail.

Not me.Not in a thousand years.I aligned it, saw that it wasn't even close, and that was enough. The original CCG slid flawlessly right back onto place. The pin fit perfectly. The rifle re-assembled in seconds.

And now I'll write that check to Springfield, like I should have in the first place.

Leave this mount to the airsoft gang.

BTW, the mount *is* aluminum. The screws and pseudo-CCG are steel, but the actual mount is absolutely not steel - which is "as advertised."It's not sold as a steel mount, but I notice that someone here said it is steel, and it most certainly is not.
